Eamonn Delahunt

Eamonn Delahunt is a Professor in the UCD School of Public Health, Physiotherapy and Sports Science.

Professor Delahunt is a first-class honour, first place in class, UCD B.Sc. (Physiotherapy) graduate (2003). During his undergraduate studies, he was the recipient of numerous awards including: the National University of Ireland Dr H.H. Stewart Scholarship in Physiotherapy (2002), the UCD 3rd Year Scholarship in Physiotherapy (2003), the Professor P. Casey Bursary in Psychiatry (2003), and the Murray Surgical Prize in Physiotherapy, (2003). He was the first-ever B.Sc. (Physiotherapy) graduate in Ireland to receive an Irish Research Council for Science, Engineering and Technology (IRCSET) post-graduate PhD research scholarship (2003). He also received a UCD Open Post-graduate Scholarship (2004) to support his PhD studies. He was awarded his PhD from the UCD School of Physiotherapy and Performance Science, in 2006.

In September 2008, Eamonn was appointed as a full-time permanent College Lecturer in what was then the School of Physiotherapy and Performance Science, now the School of Public Health, Physiotherapy and Sports Science, and where he is now a Professor. He has held several leadership roles, including Programme Coordinator of the B.Sc. Health and Performance Science undergraduate degree programme (Sept 2020–August 2023; Sept 2008–Oct 2015). Professor Delahunt’s leadership has significantly contributed to establishing the UCD B.Sc. Health and Performance Science as the national leading sport sciences programme; as evidenced by the highest CAO points requirement of any Level 8 sport sciences programme. Professor Delahunt has also held the roles of Head of Subject (Feb 2020 – Aug 2023) and Associate Dean for Sport and Performance (Feb 2020 – Aug 2023). Since 2018, UCD has ranked within the top 100 in the world for Sports-Related Subjects in the QS World University Rankings. Professor Delahunt’s academic leadership has unquestionably contributed to establishing UCD are Ireland’s foremost educational and research institution within the QS field of Sport-Related Subjects.

Professor Delahunt has extensive clinical experience, having previously worked as a Chartered Physiotherapist in ExWell Medical in both part-time (2003–2006; 2007–2009) and full-time (2006–2007) capacities.

The thematic focus of Professor Delahunt’s research relates to the prevention and rehabilitation of sport-related injuries. He has an exceptional and sustained record of high-quality peer-reviewed article publications that has solidified his reputation as an international leader in his research area. Professor Delahunt has authored/co-authored >175 peer-reviewed journal articles. Most of his authored/co-authored peer-reviewed articles have been published in Q1 journals within the Sport Sciences category of the Journal Citation Reports. Throughout his academic career, he has authored/co-authored 30 peer-reviewed articles which have been published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, the #1 ranked journal in the Sport Sciences category of the Journal Citation Reports. As per data from the “Updated science-wide author databases of standardized citation indicators” (Ioannidis, 2023), Professor Delahunt is ranked within the top 1.5% of scientists globally, who author/co-author peer-reviewed articles published in journals within the Sport Sciences category of the Journal Citation Reports. Professor Delahunt is an Associate Editor of the British Journal of Sports Medicine, the #1 ranked journal in the Sport Sciences category of the Journal Citation Reports. He is also an Associate Editor of the Journal of Science and Medicine in Sport, which is a Q1 journal in the Sport Sciences section of the Journal Citation Reports. Additionally, he is also an editorial board member of Journal of Athletic Training.
