In this lecture we discuss strength and power training and, in particular, the mechanics that underpin these. An understanding of these mechanics, which include force, rate of force development (RFD), and impulse, will enable us to design and defend effective training programmes that enhance athletic performance.
Following this presentation, you will be able to:
Understand how to programme for an athlete aiming to improve sports performance and athletic motor skills.
How force-time curves separate peak force from rate of force development, why most sport happens within 300 milliseconds, and how the dynamic strength index and jump force-time data show whether an athlete needs strength or power.
Why speed reps and dumbbell boxing train deceleration instead of power, which exercises let only gravity slow the movement, and why athletes need training across the whole force-velocity curve, shown with a shot put study.
How Newton's second law, impulse and ground contact time explain why strength underpins power, how strength is kept throughout periodization, rough strength benchmarks, and why most sports draw on the same squat-like triple extension.
How strength training lowers injury risk through greater capacity and stronger connective tissue, how it keeps type 2 fibers and motor units with aging, why myonuclei speed retraining, and its link with all-cause mortality.
