Episode Summary

Learning Objectives: 1. Understand what burnout is and the contributors to burnout. 2. Understand what compassion fatigue is. 3. Identify signs and symptoms of burnout and compassion fatigue. 4. Learn and apply the PERMA model of wellbeing in your professional and personal life.

Positive psychology is presented as the science of optimal human functioning, focused on helping clinicians build wellbeing rather than simply “being happy.” Learners are introduced to the PERMA model: positive emotions, engagement, relationships, meaning, and achievement. Each area is explained with practical examples, such as intentionally creating positive emotions, recognizing negativity bias, using gratitude and savoring, and making time for “flow” activities that support focus and energy. The section also emphasizes the importance of meaningful relationships, purpose inside and outside work, and setting goals that support accomplishment and personal growth. A second framework, “vitality buckets,” helps clinicians reflect on what restores or drains them professionally and personally. Professional repleters might include friendships at work, meaningful tasks, growth opportunities, and breaks, while depleters include nonstop work, paperwork, and value misalignment. Personal repleters include hobbies, relationships, spirituality, and healthy routines, while stress, caregiving demands, conflict, and lack of rest can drain energy. Overall, learners are encouraged to apply these tools intentionally in daily life.
